He was born in the western part of Pennsylvania where he lived until he was three years old, when his parents removed to Wayne (now Ashland) County, Ohio. When he was eighteen years old he returned to Pennsylvania and learned the carpenter's trade. He helped to build the first large grist mill near Mocchunk, also the locks in the canal. He continued to work at his trade as carpenter and contractor until within a few weeks of his death. In politics he was a Democrat; in religion, a Presbyterian. He resided in Lake Township, Ashland County, Ohio, near McZena.
John married Susan Mary Warnes,1 daughter of Henry Warnes 1 and Elizabeth Balsley,1 on 18 May 1837 in Lakeville, Wayne Co, OH.1 Susan was born on 18 Sep 1815 in McZena, Wayne (later Ashland) Co, OH1 and died on 31 Aug 1885 in McZena, Ashland Co, OH1 at age 69.
