He was raised in "Culbertson Row" in Pennsylvania.

He studied for the ministry, but lost his hearing. He moved to Madison, Indiana, and engaged in farming.

Charles married Elizabeth McKemey 3 on 8 Sep 1809.3 Elizabeth was born on 15 Aug3 and died on 4 Dec 1823.3

She was from Pennsylvania.
She was a descendant of the first Presbyterian minister in the United States.
The source states that she was born in 1872, but this is clearly an error.

Charles next married Mariah Logan 3 on 25 Jul 1825.3 Mariah was born on 9 Sep 17993 and died in Oct 1900 in Peru, Nemaha Co, NE3 at age 101.

She was from Virginia.

2. Elizabeth McClay Culbertson 3 (Charles McClay1) was born on 13 Dec 18103 and died in 18853 at age 75.

Elizabeth married Col. Joshua Wilkinson U.S.A..5

Resided at Newport, Vermillion County, Indiana.

Elizabeth was married again, name of husband is unknown. His name may have been W. H. Scott.2

   15 F    i. Mary Belle [Unk] .5 After her marriage she was known as Countess Uda.5

She resided at Naples, Italy.
She was a singer but turned her attention to literature, particularly that of translation of the Italian contemporaneous literature. While engaged in this work, she met and married the Count Uda, a man of some note in literature.

   16 F    ii. Kate Scott .5

Resided at Danville, Vermillion County, Illinois.
She was a fine singer and musician; studied music in Milan, Italy.

   17 M    iii. W. H. Scott Jr. 5 died about 1861-1865.

He died at age twenty from Army service during the Civil War.

4. Josephine Louisa Culbertson 4 (Charles McClay1) was born on 9 Sep 18133 and died before 1923.

Josephine married Rev. John Black.6 John was born in Pennsylvania.

He was a Presbyterian minister. Moved to Kentucky and Mississippi, where they resided eleven years; then moved to Allegheny, Pennsylvania.

He was first a carpenter; later studied divinity, and assumed the pastorate of the Fifth Presbyterian Church, of Pittsburgh. Later he was in Mississippi and Kentucky. He was a man of great power and eloquence.

When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the company, which became Co. I, of the 11th Ind. Zouaves, and served three months. After this he entered the 37th Illinois Regt. for three years. At the organization of the 11th Ind. he was made Corporal. At the organization of the 37th Illinois, at Chicago, he was elected Capt. of Co. K, in which capacity he served for three years, being mustered out Sept. 30, 1864.
He became a noted lawyer in Chicago.

Josephine next married Dr. William Fithian 6 in 1850.6 William died before 1923. They had no children. 6

Resided at Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.

7. Charles McClay Culbertson 3 (Charles McClay1) was born on 5 Aug 1819 in Jefferson Co, IN3 and died after 1893. HIs name may have been spelled Charles Maclay Culbertson.2

He left home at fourteen years of age and entered a store as a clerk. After some years he went into merchandising and pork packing, in partnership with Daniel A. Jones, at Newport, Indiana. The firm moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1857, and engaged in packing. This firm was dissolved later, and the firm of Culbertson & Blair formed. He was a member of the Chicago Board of Trade for some years. He remained in active business until 1878, and in 1896 removed to his farm at Newman, Illinois, and engaged in the breeding of Hereford cattle. Here he had a stock farm of 4000 acres and it was said he was the largest breeder and importer of Hereford cattle in the United States.
His daughters resided in the most aristocratic part of Chicago, and were married to prominent men.

Charles married Rhoda A. Williams 6 on 1 Dec 1842 in Newport, Vermillion Co, IN.6 Rhoda was born on 11 Apr 1825.6

   23 M    ii. James McKemey Culbertson 6 was born on 10 Sep 18456 and died on 6 May 18766 at age 30. He had no known marriage and no known children. 6

He was a dry goods merchant, and at his death left most of his fortune to a church.

   25 F    iv. Candace Josephine Culbertson 6 was born on 4 Nov 1849.6 She had no known marriage and no known children. 6

   26 M    v. Charles McClay Culbertson 6 was born on 4 Sep 1852.6 He had no known marriage and no known children.

Mariah married William Daily 6 on 8 Jun 1850.6 William was born on 24 Jul 18286 and died after 1923.

Resided at Auburn, Nemaha County, Nebraska.

14. John Wilkinson 5 (Elizabeth McClay Culbertson2, Charles McClay1).

John married, name of wife is unknown.

His child was:

18. Brig. Gen. John Charles Black 6 (Josephine Louisa Culbertson2, Charles McClay1) was born in Mississippi.

He was in college when the Civil war broke out. He was the first man to enlist in the Company, which became Co. I, of the 11th Ind. Zouaves, and served three months. After this he entered the 37th Ill. Regt. for three years. At the organization of the 11th Ind., he was made the Sergeant-Major. At the organization of the 37th Ill., at Chicago, he was elected Major. He was later promoted to Lieut. Col., then Col. of the Regt. He served until the close of war and was in command of a brigade, and as Brig. General, led the charge upon the Blakely Batteries at the Capture of Mobile, the last general engagement of the war. He was in Texas a short time and mustered out in summer of 1865. He was seriously crippled while in the army.
He was Commissioner of Pensions under Cleveland's first administration, and became one of Chicago's most noted lawyers. He at one time resided at Urbana, Ohio, and later at Danville, Illinois.
He was Congressman-at-large from Illinois.

31. Charles William Culbertson 6 (Samuel2, Charles McClay1).

Resided at Shelbyville, Shelby County, Indiana.
He received a college education and became a carpenter; later, a ticket agent; telegrapher, and last, assistant cashier of the First National Bank at Shelbyville, Indiana. He was a leader in the Prohibition party and was nominated Lieut-Gov. on that ticket (1892).

Charles married Lydia Harris 8 on 9 Nov 1871.8 Lydia died in Shelbyville, Shelby Co, IN.

She was from Lancaster, Jefferson County, Indiana.
