General Notes: Husband - Joseph "Packer Joe" Alexander

He came to America with his parents when he was four years old. They settled near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He came to Mercer County in 1799, and settled on a farm where his grandson, Joseph W. Alexander, would later reside.

For years previous to his removal to Mercer County, he had packed goods over the mountains to Pittsburgh and had thus obtained the title of "Packer Joe," a term by which he was generally known ever after. His journey from Allegheny County to Mercer, in 1800, was made on horse-back, and his wife and children rode high up in the air upon their goods. Often it was necessary to stop for several hours to remove brush and trees from their pathway, and the straggling branches would frequently gall their faces as they rode under them, and when, at last, they reached their wild home, it seemed to the weary wife a place utterly unworthy of the labor that it had cost to gain it, and, for a time, she would have been willing to forego the prospect of independence in the future, for an abode once more near the habitations of mankind. But such discouragement was but momentary, and with a strong self-reliance based upon a firm confidence in the mercies of God, this worthy couple bravely attacked the many hardships of their situation, and they were abundantly rewarded by seeing those hardships vanish away as the years rolled on, and the wilderness bud and blossom like the rose.
