He was born on the Big Sewickley creek, about six miles south of Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. In 1838, he came to Saltsburg and learned the trade of carpenter and cabinet maker with his brother, James R. Daugherty, and continued with him till 1864. From the latter date he was managing an undertaking establishment. He held all the borough positions save that of constable.
