General Notes: Husband - John A. Dodds

He received a liberal education and learned the blacksmith trade, which he followed six years, subsequently engaging in mercantile business for ten years. In 1864 he enlisted in Company D, Sixth P. H. A., and served until the close of the war. In 1867 he began milling in Butler County, Pennsylvania. In 1875 he purchased a one-half interest in a mill in Beaver County, and in 1877 bought out the other half.
He was a ruling elder in the Reformed Presbyterian church. In politics he was a Prohibitionist.

Among the most prominent flouring mills in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, was the "Upper Ten," owned by John A. Dodds. This mill was a frame structure, three stories high, 35 by 40 feet, with basement, and contained the machinery for the manufacture of flour, feed, etc. An engine of fifty-horse power was used, and ten sets of rolls.
