He was one of fourteen children, and was born in Londonderry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, to which place his great grandfather, John Alexander, of Londonderry, Ireland, had come in 1728-9. Having acquired a good education at Caznovia Seminary, Madison County, New York, he came to Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, in 1833, where he engaged for some years as a successful educator of youth. In 1843 he commenced the practice of law at the Lewistown bar.

Although they shared the same surname, he and his wife were not relatives.
