About 1840 he succeeded his father in the management of the Spread Eagle Tavern, on the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh road, but later gave up this business and took up farming, making his home on the property which was still the residence of many of his descendants years later.
For many years he held the position of tax collector in the community.

He was the father of nine children, six sons and three daughters, all but one of
whom were living in 1918.
