He was educated in the public schools of Irwin, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and at the age of seventeen years took a position in the local office of the Westmoreland Coal Company. Two years later he accepted a clerkship in the store of the Hecla Coke Company, with whom he remained two years, at the expiration of which time he returned to Irwin, and for a period of twenty-five years held the position of weighmaster at the Yough shaft for the Penn Gas-Coal Company.
