General Notes: Husband - Charles H. F. Daily

He received his education in the public schools of his native region. His educational advantages, however, were somewhat meager, and he was obliged early in life to take part in the serious business of making his own livelihood. He was at an early age connected with a grocery and drug house for a time, and afterwards entered the employ of the Keystone Coal Company, as scale boss at the Keystone Mines in Sewickley township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was soon advanced first to outside foreman and then to assistant superintendent of that mine. In 1912 he was made superintendent of the mine at Claridge, and shortly afterwards moved to Darragh as assistant to Superintendent David Fleming. Upon the death of Mr. Fleming in 1915, he was appointed to take his place, and became superintendent for the Sewickley, Madison and Arona Coal mines. The Sewickley mine, opened in 1891, employed three hundred and twenty-five hands, the Madison, opened in 1900, with forty men, and the Arona with seventy-five men, took their coal from an extensive area, their branches reaching out in every direction, yet were themselves all contained within a radius of three-quarters of a mile at Madison Station or Darragh Post Office, nine miles southwest of Greensburg. About one-half a million tons were extracted and sent annually to market.
In politics Mr. Daily was an ardent Republican, while in religious belief he was a Presbyterian and attended the Long Run Presbyterian Church. He was very prominent in the Masonic order, having reached the thirty-second degree in Free Masonry, and was affiliated with Westmoreland Lodge, No. 518, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; ----- Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; ----- Council, Royal and Select Masters; ----- Commandery, Knights Templar; ----- Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; and Valley of Pittsburgh Consistory, Sovereign Princes of the Royal Secret.
As a representative of a historic family, he always felt keenly interested in the local history and genealogical records of the region. For years he was collecting in a variety of lines, many of which had to do with these subjects, and among other things he possessed a most instructive and interesting collection of relics, a large number of which were picked up by himself from the old Rushy Run battle ground. His collection of arms, ancient and modern, and of savage and civilized peoples, include a number of interesting forms of the old horse and duelling pistols. He also had a remarkable assortment of ancient ivory carvings, many of which were very rare specimens, and he has also gave much attention to pottery and china and possessed many examples of the rarest wares. His collection was unsurpassed and probably unequalled in Western Pennsylvania. Mr. Daily resided in one of the oldest and most interesting houses in Hempfield township.
