General Notes: Husband - Peter Simpkins

---

He was left an orphan at the age of thirteen, having prior to that time received only a few months' schooling. He reached manhood in West Salem Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania and for over thirty years was chiefly engaged in operating a coal mine on his farm, which is believed to be the first coal ever mined in Mercer County. This in connection with the operation of his farm constituted his main life's work.
