He and his wife left the religious oppression that was occurring in Switzerland and went to Germany where they may have thought they could find religious freedom. They first went to Darmstadt, Germany, near Frankfurt. It had become the seat of the protestant reformation. However, after a few years the family moved south along the Rhine River to Heidelberg, Germany, where they settled.
