He was born on the Powers' homestead in O'Hara township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. There he grew to manhood, in his youth acquiring a substantial education in the public schools. He commenced his business career in the employ of the Pittsburgh Coal and Gas Company, then with the Pittsburgh Car Company, and later bought thirty-six acres of land, on which he then resided. He made many improvements on this property, among other things erecting a fine residence on the place about 1889, and cultivated his farm for general products. He gave his political support to the Republican party, and was a member of the Methodist church.
