He was a farmer in Lower Tyrone township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He was a democrat, and held the offices of county commissioner, from 1851 to 1853, inclusive, school director and justice of the peace of his township. He attended to a great deal of business as administrator and executor of estates in the county. He was a member of the Tyrone Presbyterian church, and a ruling elder of the same, for thirty years.

There is confusion in the sources regarding the parents of this man.
