General Notes: Husband - David Lawson
He was born in Ireland, came to America with his parents, and settled in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in 1794. He married and settled in Kittanning, Armstrong County, in 1804, and in 1812 moved to Clarion County.
He was agent for the Holland Land Company as surveyor. He was a well educated man and was a member of the Legislature for two terms, the first in 1824.
Of Scotch-Irish extraction, he was born in the North of Ireland. When a young man he emigrated to the United States and located near Kittanning, Pennsylvania. He studied law and subsequently turned his attention to civil engineering. In 1813 he established the family home in Clarion County, where he was engaged in the surveying business for a number of years, and where he eventually settled on a farm just above Lawsonham. He named the Clarion river, on which he had a surveying camp. One of the men in his employ said that echoes in the vicinity of the river sounded like a clarionette; hence the name, Clarion river. Mr. Lawson was an extensive land-owner in that section of the state; he cleared a great deal of land, and had many interesting experiences. When he came there to settle he brought his money along in a bureau. The load was too heavy, so he set the bureau down in the woods and left it and the money until he could return for same. As the country was virgin wilderness there was no one to touch the money, and he secured it safely on his return. [GPHAV, 572]
He and his wife passed the closing years of their lives on their farm in Madison township, Clarion County.
