He was a noted cattle drover and Indian trader, driving cattle to Detroit, Michigan, and there trading with the French and Indians. In 1778 he was granted an order of the court by Judge Crawford, of Hannastown, to cut, clear and bridge a road, thirty feet wide, from Greensburg to a white oak tree on Simon McGrew's plantation. This was the first road cut through Westmoreland County following the building of the Braddock road. In 1783 he was given an order of the court to cut a road from this same oak tree on his father's place to Davis's Ferry, (later Buena Vista) on the Youghiogheny river.
Both he and his wife lived to be centenarians: he dying at the age of one hundred and two on the farm where he had been born and passed his entire life. Thirty days prior to his death his wife passed away, being one hundred and one years old.
