General Notes: Husband - John Dewoody
He came to America in 1792. Lived at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for four years. He came to Venango County, in 1796, and settled on a farm, being the second settler in Victory township. He raised a family of eight children, and followed farming. In the War of 1812, he served for one year, in the militia, guarding the frontier. He was on the lake at the time of Perry's victory. He commenced keeping a hotel, in 1804, which he continued for thirty years, and served as Township Constable for several years. [HVC 1879, 651]
Though not so inviting as other parts of Venango County, Pennsylvania, Victory township was settled almost as early as the western frontier of Pennsylvania became a safe place of residence. Prominent among the earliest arrivals was John Dewoody. A native of the North of Ireland, he emigrated to America at the age of twenty-two, and lived for a time at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Thence he drifted westward and at Chartiers creek near Pittsburgh met and married Anis, daughter of Captain McCullough of the American army. He gave his daughter as her dower a horse and a cow. Arriving at the valley of Sandy creek John Dewoody disposed of these animals to Samuel Patterson in settlement of his claim to a tract of four hundred acres. Patterson was a young man; he was unmarried and lived principally by hunting. He had built a cabin, which stood in the orchard on this farm and a large rock which formed the rear wall is still pointed out. Dewoody lived in this cabin for a time, and then built a more pretentious house which he kept as a hotel thirty-three years. The latter stood on the old Pittsburgh road. The date of this settlement was 1796. [HVC 1890, 740]
He was a soldier in the war of 1812. He came to Venango County, Pennsylvania, with his three brothers in 1796, in that year moving from Pittsburgh to the valley of Sandy creek, settling on the old Pittsburgh road in Victory Township. A portion of his land was long owned by his son, John, who kept hotel there for many years. [HVC 1919, 1001]
His approximate date of birth is judged from the statement that he immigrated to America at the age of 21 or 22. [HVC 1890, 89 & 740]
