He passed his childhood and early youth in his native town. It was here that he received his early education, attending for this purpose the local public schools, and here also that his early impressions and associations were formed. He was between twelve and fourteen years of age when his parents removed to Greensburg, Pennsylvania, bringing him with them, and here he continued his education at the public schools of Greensburg. He continued to study until he had reached the age of seventeen years and had passed through most of the high school grades, but being very ambitious to begin the serious business of earning his own livelihood he then abandoned his studies and secured a position as "printer's devil" in the office of the Greensburg "Democrat." In the office of the "Democrat" he was rapidly advanced until he was given the responsible post of foreman of the printing shop. He had thus begun what promised a most brilliant career, when he was taken ill of typhoid fever, and shortly afterwards died of this dread disease. Mr. Alcorn was a man of strong religious convictions and was a very active member of the Lutheran church at Greensburg, contributing of his time and energy most liberally to advance its cause in the community. In politics he was a Democrat and had he lived would doubtless have become a prominent figure in the local organization of that party, where he was already active. He was also a member of the local lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
