He attended the public schools of Larimer, Pennsylvania, the family moving in 1879 to Westmoreland County. In 1892 Mr. Cravan entered the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and for over twenty-five years, was continuously employed by that corporation. Beginning as fireman he worked his way up until he reached that of locomotive engineer, to which he was promoted in February, 1901. Beginning in 1906 Mr. Cravan occupied a seat on the board of directors of the First National Bank. Politically he was identified with the Socialists. He belonged to the Albert W. Routh Division, No. 772, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, No. 220, of Trafford, and affiliated with Syrian Lodge, No. 612, Free and Accepted Masons, of Wilmerding, in which he attained the thirty-second degree; Zerubbabel Chapter, No. 162, Pittsburgh; Pittsburgh Commandery, No. 1, Knights Templar; Pennsylvania Consistory, Sublime Princess of the Royal Secret, Valley of Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
