He was born in Ireland, whence when four years of age he was brought to America, and was reared in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where his wife was born. Throughout life he followed farming.

After the death of her husband, she, with her family, removed to La Salle County, Illinois, in 1851, where she spent her remaining days.
