He came to America with his parents and after spending the first winter east of the mountains they came to the area of Titusville, Crawford County. Both he and his father had tracts of land located where the north side of Titusville, Pa. is now located - this was in Oilcreek Township, Crawford County. In 1811 the Alcorns moved to Cherrytree Township, Venango County, and settled on a 700 acre tract of land that James Alcorn had purchased from Kerr and Titus (agents for the Holland Land Company). John Alcorn settled on a 100 acre tract which was patented to him June 11, 1830 (part of the 700 acres) and he worked as a carpenter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, until 1820 building houses. John Alcorn was described as a large red-headed and red-faced man. He and his wife were charter members of the Fairview Methodist Church.
