General Notes: Husband - Benoni Dawson

After his marriage he moved to western Pennsylvania, to an area that later became Fayette County, where he joined the family of his uncle, George Dawson, who had preceded him into that locality. After a short stay with his relatives he continued his westward way and settled in the lower corner of what is now Beaver County, the town of Georgetown being situated on land once his property. He had brought with him his family and all his possessions, including seven slaves, and while in Fayette County sent men ahead with his cattle, having given them orders to clear land for a homestead. He built a mill on Mill Creek. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and is quoted as being "a good man to the poor."

The borough of Georgetown is pleasantly situated in the north part of Greene township, on the Ohio river. It is one of the oldest settlements in Beaver County, and was laid out on the 13th of January, 1793, by Benoni Dawson.

He was a farmer, also engaging in business as a lumberman and miller. In 1780 he went to Pennsylvania and settled where Georgetown later stood. He laid out the town and built the first block-house in that section, and was the second largest taxpayer in the county. Being a slave holder in Maryland, he built cabins for his slaves and also erected a grist-mill. At the time of his removal he supposed that he was settling in Virginia, but after establishing himself he had the land surveyed and was surprised to find that it was situated in Pennsylvania. It is recorded that he emancipated his slaves, and that while they accepted their freedom most of them remained with him until they died.
