He was educated in the public schools of Peters township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and at the Mercersburg College under the presidency of Dr. Highbee. After leaving college he returned to the farm and was a farmer on the Gillan homestead in Peters township. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
