He was born near Lochleven, Scotland, Billingary parish, Shire of Fife. He was educated in the schools of Scotland. He came to the United States when twenty years old, locating first at Webster, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he remained about fifteen years. Later, he was a farmer of Washington township, Fayette County.
In 1896 he purchased a farm Washington township, Fayette County, which contained seventy-three acres of valuable land. He was one of the successful farmers of the county and was also engaged in running a dairy.
He was a member of the Redstone Presbyterian church; also of the
Christian Endeavor Society. He was a Republican in politics.
