General Notes: Husband - John Alden

He was born in England and came to America in the “Mayflower,” in 1620. He was not one of the original pilgrims from Leyden, Holland, nor one of those who first embarked on the “Speedwell” at Delft Haven, but joined at Southampton, where the vessel stopped to meet the provision ship from London. His joining the pilgrims was an accident and came through the illness of the ship's carpenter, who had been taken sick suddenly. Young Alden, hearing that the ship was short a man, on this account decided to apply for the position. Although a cooper by trade he was considered proficient enough with tools for a ship's carpenter, and was added to the crew. When he arrived at Plymouth, “being a hopeful young man,” as Governor Bradford states, “he was much desired,” but left to his own liking to return to England with the “Mayflower” or to stay with the pilgrims. He elected to cast his lot with the latter and stayed, becoming one of the leading men of the colony. He was probably the youngest of all the signers to the “compact,” drawn up in the cabin of the “Mayflower,” and signed while they lay at the anchor in the harbor of Provincetown, November 15, 1620. President John Adams, one of his descendants, claimed for him the honor of being the first to set foot on the historic rock of Plymouth. He was second in command of the soldiery under Captain Miles Standish, holding the rank of lieutenant. He held other offices and was a man of usefulness to the little band during their early years.

He proved a valuable member of the Pilgrim company, as is shown by his life of public activity. In 1633 he was chosen one of the assistants, that is, one of the governor's council, and was annually reelected until 1641. In that year he was elected deputy from Duxbury to the general court, and continued to serve until 1650, when he was again chosen a member of the council, and so continued until his death. In 1656-57- 58 he was treasurer of the colony, having succeeded Myles Standish in that office.

He was the last surviving signer of the “Mayflower” compact, deputy governor of the Plymouth colony.

He and his wife had eleven children, but authorities differ as to the time and place of birth. The list is taken from the Alden-Smith Genealogy (1903).

General Notes: Wife - Priscilla Mullins

She came to America on the ship "Mayflower" with her parents. Her father died on shipboard and his wife died soon afterwards. Priscilla lived with Governor Bradford's family until her marriage to John Alden.

Notes: Marriage

Their courtship and marriage are charmingly related in Longfellow's “Courtship of Miles Standish.”
