General Notes: Husband - Isaac Simeon Alden
He obtained a good preparatory education; then deciding upon the legal profession read law with Johnson, Struthers & Brown, and was admitted to the Warren County, Pennsylvania, bar, June 8, 1854. He at once began practice in Warren, and the following year was elected district attorney of Warren County. He served most acceptably, and when his term of office expired returned to his private law practice. In 1862 he was deputy revenue collector, and in 1874 received the appointment of United States bank examiner. He held this office until appointed postmaster during the administration of President Garfield, holding this appointment for several years. In 1891 he was reappointed bank examiner. In all these public offices he was conscientious, faithful to his duty and most capable in the transaction of all business connected therewith. He had private business interests; to these he gave no greater or more careful supervision than to his public duties.
He was vice-president of the First National Bank of Warren, elected in 1894, and secretary and treasurer of the Warren-Chautauqua Gas Company, elected in 1892. He was a Republican in politics, but most independent in political thought and action. He served Warren as councilman two terms; was president of councils, but was compelled to resign this office on account of failing health. His ability as a financier and his business experience rendered him very valuable in handling city finances, his opinion always being first obtained on all financial transactions in which the borough was involved. His retirement from councils was sincerely regretted by his colleagues and the public at large. He was trustee of Warren academy, and a member of the Presbyterian church of Warren, which he joined in June, 1896.
He was a man of few words, but what he had to say on any subject was always to the point. He never occupied middle ground, but was fearless and decided in either his support or his opposition to any public question or measure. Socially he was genial, courteous and always cheerful. “Being the soul of honor himself, he saw only the good qualities of others, never spoke of the faults of his fellow men, and had faith in them when others doubted.” Honor, integrity, justice and a desire to be of service to his fellows were distinguishing qualities of a most noble character. [GPHAV, 562]
