He studied medicine with his brother-in-law, Dr. Rathbun, of Camden, New York; practiced in Ash­ville and Ripley, New York, and Coldwater and Detroit, Michigan. He was a member of the Michigan legislature in 1835, 1836 and 1837, and during his last term was speaker of the house. He was also railroad commissioner.
