The old family homestead contained 295 acres in North Strabane township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. After the death of the father, John Fulton, it came under the management of three of his sons, Robert D., John and James C.

He was actively interested in the educational interests of his community, and served as school trustee. In politics he was a Democrat, and in religion he and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian Church at Canonsburg.
