General Notes: Husband - John Gourley

He was just a boy when the family crossed the ocean from Ireland to Nova Scotia in 1817. In 1819 they removed to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in 1821 to Huntingdon County, where he continued to live until he settled in Indiana County, in 1830. His first settlement there was in West Mahoning township, whence he and his family subsequently removed to North Mahoning township, buying land on which they passed the remainder of their lives.

He was the first tax collector of North Mahoning township. In that year, (1846), the township preceded all others in its settlement with the county. The Gourley land was patented to the Holland Company. Mr. Gourley settled on this tract in 1839.
He served as a county commissioner of Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and also as elder in the Presbyterian Church, for thirty-nine years: fifteen at Perryville, and twenty-four at the Covode Church.
