He came to Cooperstown, Venango County, Pennsylvania, with his mother and brothers, but lived there only six months, returning to Pittsburgh, and he became very prominent in the medical profession there and later in Philadelphia. [CAB, 569]

He became a physician and was first engaged in the practice of medicine in Pittsburgh, subsequently removing to Philadelphia, where, being a single man, he made his home at the Girard House, living there until his death. He was an able business man, and for a number of years was a member of the Stock Exchange in New York City. [HMC 1909, 921]
