He settled in Paxtang township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and had surveyed to him in March, 1738, 258 acres of land on the bank of the Susquehanna river, adjoining Robert and William Renick's land. This location was subsequently secured by Joseph Chambers, James locating in Hanover township.
He was born either in Scotland or Ireland. In America, he settled first in Paxtang Township [Lancaster County, Pennsylvania?] and had surveyed to him in March, 1738, 258 acres of land on the Susquehanna River adjoining the property of Robert and Wm. Renick. This location was subsequently bought by Joseph Chambers. James located for a while in Hanover. On October 20, 1738, the Land Office of the Colony of Pennsylvania gave a warrant to James Crawford for land in Pennsborough Township, Lancaster County. This land lay along the north bank of Yellow Breeches Creek in what is now Allen Township in Cumberland County, and was 8 miles south of Harrisburg. It consisted of 157 acres. His four sons, Robert, William, James and John continued to live on this farm after their father's death in 1775 till about 1790. In Sept. 24, 1791, Robert and William were residing in Augusta County, Virginia.
