His educational training was such as could be secured in the public schools of Pulaski Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, during his boyhood. From that time on he was interested in agricultural pursuits and made a specialty for many years of breeding and raising Jersey cattle and the highest grade of trotting horses. The products of Maple Shade farm were well known all over Lawrence County and commanded high prices.
He served for three years as township assessor, and in the spring of 1908 was elected road supervisor, for a term of three years.
