When ten years old he was placed in the Soldiers' Orphan School at Dayton, Pennsylvania, remaining there six years. In February, 1877, he arrived in Chicago, Illinois, and for several years attended school during the winter months, and followed gardening and the nursery business during the summer. Later he was in the the grocery business. He united with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1880, and joined the M. E. Church in 1888.
