Merle L. Jacobs
Merle L. Jacobs, 63, of Mars, a former resident of the Franklin area, died at 1:20 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 1996, in the Oncology Unit of Northwest Medical Center at Franklin.
Born Dec. 8. 1932, in Irwin Township, he was a son of Martin L. and Sadie E. Latshaw Jacobs.
Mr. Jacobs attended the Jones Public School and Wesley High School and was a graduate of Grove City HIgh School.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.
Mr. Jacobs was a toolmaker for 30 years at Joy Manufacturing Co., retiring in 1980 due to heart disease.
He was a former member of the Polk Borough Council and was a past president of the Polk Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Jacobs was a member of the Franklin American Legion Post No. 476.
He attended the First United Methodist Church and the Polk United Methodist Church.
Mr. Jacobs enjoyed traveling, cooking, hunting and fishing.
He was married Aug. 1, 1953, to the former Gloria F. Cratty, who survives. Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs had been living in the Mars area for the past 10 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Michael (Linda) Turner of Utica, Mrs. Jim (Brenda) Shankel of Mars and Mrs. John (Mary Beth) Guilinger of Franklin RD 1; and four grandchildren, Ryan Turner and Amy Turner of Utica and Scott Shankel and Leigh Ann Shankel of Mars.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Jacobs was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Amy Jo Jacobs; four sisters, Virginia Jacobs, Mrs. Chatty Taylor, Mrs. Zella Farren and Mrs. Goldie Hoffman; and five brothers, Kenneth Jacobs, Floyd Jacobs, Edward Jacobs, Eugene Jacobs and Lehn Jacobs.
The Huff Chapel in Franklin is in charge of arrangements.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Oncology Unit of Northwest Medical Center at Franklin.
