He was born at the Dale homestead, Centre County, PA, and throughout life was one of the county's most successful farmers. He took a deep interest in the Patrons of Husbandry, of which he was an influential member. He belonged to the Lu­theran Church of Boalsburg, and was one of its main supporters and pillars.
