He began active life in the service of the Westmoreland Coal Company at its Northside mine near Irwin, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, but relinquished his position there to enter the hotel business in Pittsburgh as a clerk, and later became proprietor of a hotel in East Liverpool, Ohio.
