He was educated in the common schools of North Union township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He was raised on a farm, and was a farmer all of his life, being a producer of grains and small fruits.
He was a member of the Baptist church beginning in 1855, and held the office of deacon for many years. He was a member of the Masonic order.
