General Notes: Husband - John Alcorn

He [James Alcorn] came to the Black-lick settlement, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, in 1795. While living near Frankstown, in 1794, his wife was lost and no trace was ever seen or tidings heard of her.

The Alcorn family were among the very earliest to settle in western Pennsylvania, and he dwelt there when the place was practically a wilderness. The perils and dangers which surrounded the old families in what was then a frontier region may well be seen in a tradition of the Alcorn family which has been handed down from those times. His mother was captured by the Indians. She started, so the legend states, for a pail of water, leaving a sleeping baby in the cradle. Her path led her to a nearby spring and she was never seen or heard of again.
