General Notes: Husband - James Craig

He died June 24. [HVC 1879, 644]

In all probability he was the first settler in Scrubgrass township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. From papers in the possession of Ira D. McCoy, we learn that Mr. Craig, in company with James Fearis, came into the township sometime in the year 1795, and built a log cabin a few rods below the house now [1879] occupied by Mr. Ira D. McCoy. He then returned to Westmoreland county. The next spring he moved his family, consisting of his wife and two children, Jane and John, to the cabin, and began clearing out the forest. Shortly after he settled, he built a saw-mill on his property; doubtless the first one in all this part of the country. [HVC 1879, 644]

In 1795 he accompanied James Scott and James Fearis, his brother-in-law, to Scrubgrass Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. They built a small cabin without floor, and covered with a bark roof, and cleared a field from the surrounding woods, returning to pass the following winter at their former homes in Westmoreland County. Mrs. Craig accompanied her husband to Scrubgrass in the summer of 1796, being the first white woman who came into the township, and their son John, born in Westmoreland County, was the first white child brought into the new settlement. He erected the first sawmill in his neighborhood. During the War of 1812 he served in Captain Witherup's company.

General Notes: Wife - Eleanor Fearis

She and other members of her own and the Fearis family returned to Westmoreland County, PA, frequently, bringing back with them the currant bush, asparagus and other garden vegetables. She brought the first geese into the township from the old home.
