After living at various places in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio he settled at Lake Brady, Ohio, but later he was living at Erie, Pennsylvania, in about 1919. [CAB, 958]

He mostly followed the occupation of an oil well driller. They lived in several different places - Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, and during the oil excitement at Scio he formed a partnership with T. T. Moore, in 1905, and went to contracting for the Ohio Oil Co. On September 25, 1906, he moved to Pittsburg, and on May 18, 1907, he and his wife took up their residence at Lake Brady, Ohio, for the benefit of Mrs. Witherup's health, she was an invalid.
