He studied law, and was admitted to the Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, bar at the November term, 1822. He held the office of district attorney for Dauphin County in 1827 and 1828, and for several years, in addition to the duties of his profession, he was transcribing clerk of the House of Representatives.
