General Notes: Husband - Mathew Cowen
He was born on the old family homestead at Hegarty's Cross Roads, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and as soon as large enough began to assist in the labors of the fields. His educational opportunities were therefore limited, as he only attended school about fifteen months throughout his boyhood and youth. After his marriage, he purchased 108 acres of wooded land, known as the George Wallace farm, which he greatly improved, and there engaged in lumbering and farming until 1868, when he sold to Mr. Flanigan, and bought eighty-five acres of partially-improved land, on which a log house and barn had been erected. The house was subsequently destroyed by fire as well as most of the furniture contained therein, after which Mr. Cowen erected a little shanty, in which the family lived until a substantial two-story residence was built in 1886.
