He was born on the home farm in Mt. Pleasant township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, re­ceiving his education in the subscription schools of the vicinity. He married and began life on a farm; this farm contained 204 acres of well-cultivated land, and also a good gas well. They also owned about seventy-eight acres near Hick­ory and were interested in sheep growing. They were members of the U. P. Church at Venice. He voted with the Prohibition party.
