He was a grandson or great-grandson of Ephraim Cowan, and removed to what was then known as the Camden Patent, Albany County, New York, some time between 1761 and 1763. He was a soldier of the revolution­ary war, serving in Colonel Van Wert's regi­ment of New York troops.
