At the age of eighteen he enlisted after the second battle of Bull Run, and again in 1863, when the Confederates were repulsed at Gettysburg. He was afterwards stationed with his regiment at Parkersburg, West Virginia, to intercept Morgan, who was playing havoc on a raid through Ohio. He was mustered out on August 26, 1863.
