He was the owner of large slate mines at West Bangor below York, Pennsylvania, which were worked by a village of Welshmen. His wife was an aunt of Governor Kirkwood of Iowa, formerly of York County, who stopped there to visit her while on his way to Washington to join President Garfield's Cabinet.
