He was educated at West Minster College and the State Normal School, Edinboro, Pennsylvania; was engaged in teaching for some three years, two of them in Waterford Academy, Erie County, the first year being assistant, and the second year principal. In the spring of 1876, he opened a tailoring and gents' furnishing establishment in Pulaski, Lawrence County.
