General Notes: Husband - Dr. Julius Culbertson
Madison Parish, LA
He studied medicine and graduated at the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; practiced a few years in Maysville, Kentucky, and then removed to a plantation in Mississippi, just opposite Vicksburg, where he resided until his death. He was a self-made man, having earned the money that paid for his education. At his death, before the Civil war, he owned one hundred and fifty slaves and left an estate valued at $150,000. His sons Julius and Levi resided on the plantation until breaking out of the war, when they entered the army. Levi died in the army. The loss of the slaves and deterioration in land ruined Julius, who moved to Maysville, in 1869, and engaged in various pursuits, and in 1890, sold out and moved to Texas and engaged in wagon manufacturing.
