General Notes: Husband - Richard Cottom

He came to America prior to the revolution, and settled in the colony of Maryland. He was a farmer by occupation, and during the revolution left the plow and fought under Generals Washington and Lafayette. He was engaged at the battles of Trenton and Saratoga, serving until the close of the war. When Lafayette visited America in 1832 and passed through Fayette County, Pennsylvania, he recognized his old comrade in arms and commended his bravery. About the year 1800 he left his Maryland home and with team and wagon made the journey over the mountains to Fayette County, settling on the Work farm, near Dunbar borough. Here he lived until after his retirement from active labor, then living with his son William on the latter's farm in Lower Tyrone township.
The Cottom family were Episcopalians.
