General Notes: Husband - John Welch Culbertson

---

He first engaged in mercantile business in Wayne County, Ohio; in 1828 moved to Gilead, Wood County, engaging in same business, and was appointed Postmaster by Van Buren. In 1840 he settled in what is now Fairfield, Iowa. He was a Democrat of pronounced type. He was a member of the first Legislature of Iowa, representing Jefferson County two terms. Also held minor township and county offices. In 1856, he was appointed Receiver of Public Moneys, at Fairfield, by President Pierce. He also served three terms as Clerk of Court, Jefferson County. The latter part of his life was spent on his farm of 500 acres, adjoining the town of Fairfield. His wife, who was of an old Virginia family, was a well-preserved old lady of eighty-two years in 1892.
