He descended from an old family of English extraction founded in Connecticut dur-ing the period of its early settlement, about 1635, his branch removing to Orange County, New York, prior to the Revolution. The name was originally Curvine, and an old castle belonging to the family was still standing in England in 1919.

He and his wife had a family of six children.
